My Man

How do I sum up what's been going on in our family over the last few months and the emotions that coinside? Nearly impossible, but I will try. When I met Dan he was fresh into his career as an engineer. We began dating and the Lord saw fit for us to fall in love and get married. Dan had been an interim pastor at our church for a couple of years. Two months before we wed, he accepted the role as full time youth pastor. I write that sentence with ease, yet I know Dan was faithful at praying about this huge responsibility that the Lord had laid on his heart for many, many months. He had, and still has, a passion for young people and this was an exciting leap of faith for us. I watched God use Dan as His vessel and it was amazing. God blessed us with three amazing children whom we love so dearly. With this blessing came the challenge of balancing time. Many people can relate I'm sure, but once you have kids, it becomes much more critical. I can say wholeheartedly that Dan did this well. Yes, he had some strange hours. Yes, he went on many trips. But, I have never felt like our children were missing out on having a father. In fact, it was the opposite, I caught myself watching Dan with Jake, Lydia, and Claire and thanking the Lord for such an involved Dad. And our kids got to see their dad in action doing what he does best...building relationships into the lives of teens and challenging them to follow and serve Christ.

Fast forward 11 years later (13 if you count the two interim years, which I do)...

I have never been more proud of my husband in my life than I was two Sundays ago. Not of his accomplishments, not of his years of service, but of his character and integrity. And I know God alone gets full credit and glory because of this! As I watched Dan go up in front of our church family to read his letter of resignation, I knew this was one of the hardest moments he'd face. The next couple of minutes evoked many tears...from him, from me, from many people throughout the congregation. I'd wanted to go up with him and be a support to him. In hindsight, it was a good thing I didn't as I was a blubbering mess. Ok, maybe not blubbering, but I certainly could not hold back my tears. And yet, at the same time, I was so happy. That was my man up there who had followed God's calling in his life years ealier and was now again, doing the same. Change is never easy. My eyes are welling up just writing those words. But when God calls for a change, it is always good. I don't know married life with Dan without him being a youth pastor, but I am excited for our future. Dan believes God is leading him to become a teacher in the public schools. He does not have a teaching degree so he will be going back to school to get his Masters. This will take between one and two years. We don't know what these transistion years will look like, but as Dan stated in his letter to the church, this will give us an opportunity to "trust God in a way we've never had to before."

So while the last couple weeks have been emotional ones with the changes that are occuring, we have complete peace in our God who NEVER CHANGES! If you would, please join us in prayer as Dan begins a job search. I am so thankful to the Lord for Dan. He is a good man...my man!

A Weekend Getaway!

Celebrating 11 years of marriage on 8/29!
So, I got a little surprise myself for our anniversary! My sweet, romantic hubby put in a lot of planning to surprise me for our anniversary this year. I came home from the gym on Friday, the 28th, and noticed that our garage door was not working. Dan was home from his time at the gym and was getting ready to head to work. I informed him of the problem and then left to go run a couple of errands with Claire. We got home around noon and I went to the front door and saw a letter taped to it. In the letter, I was told to pack my bags - that I was being whisked away for the weekend. It gave me options and even told me that Dan had picked out some new clothes for me to try on and and take. I also knew to pack work out clothes because one of the options was to go bike riding! I then began to scurry about to get ready for this surprise excursion. My mom came and got the kids off the bus and shortly after that, I was ready to go. Our first stop was to check out the new outlet malls on the way to Cincy. We mostly window shopped and enjoyed looking at things, kidless! Then, we had Chipotle for supper (yum). Before heading to our hotel, we stopped at Kohls and Old Navy (I needed to find some cheap - at least cheaper than the outlet mall prices - shorts for biking since my work out shorts were all dirty). Finally, we headed for the Hyatt where Dan had made reservations via Priceline. We were up on the 16th floor, so we got a really nice view of the city and even got to see some fireworks closeby since the Reds had won their ballgame that evening.
The next day, I had a choice. We could go bike riding or go to the Creation Museum or go to Newport Aquarium. We thought that maybe we could go biking and one of the other, but that didn't happen since we slept in until 10:30...yes, 10:30. It was wonderful (and needed, since I didn't sleep well that first night)! The choice for where to go was easy. I'd been to Newport Aquarium before and was disappointed, mainly for the fact that they are dolphin-less. The Creation Museum had three things going for it...it was free (we had some friends passes), I'd never been before, and it was appealing to go without kids and get to take my time going through it. (We are definitely going to take the kids soon)! It was a very neat place. Dan and I wondered how many people walk away from there impacted in some way. I think many must with the way it is presented. In fact, I eavesdropped on a few conversations where I knew people were really thinking hard. One lady even said she was going to go home and read more on Creation. To God be the Glory! Anyhow, here are some fun photos from the end of our time there with the dinos.

When we got back to our hotel, we went to go use the workout room quickly before getting ready for dinner. They were working on stuff, so they told us to go to the hotel across the street - that they had worked out an arrangement. Well, we walk over there with another couple and wait about 10 minutes or so. Whoever had given the ok did not have the leeway to do so. That was kind of awkward, but we did end up using their equipment. We then went back to the Hyatt and got ready for supper. We decided to eat at Bucca Di Beppo's. We'd just eaten there recently and had been given a peel-away gift card. Our waitress was the one who had to peel it away...I'm sure that rule was intact just to get people back to eat and spend $$$. We ended up winning the simplest of prizes (a free pint of gelato). Dan wanted to win dinner for 16 at the Pope table. We are also now entered in a drawing to win a trip for four to Italy...now wouldn't that be peachy!!!
Dan's very serious when it comes to ordering food.

Now he can be goofy.

Big bite...

On Sunday, we checked out of our hotel and decided to go for a bike ride in Eden Park. We had the perfect day! Eden Park is so pretty and there are some really cool homes. (I found out later that part of the Flying Pig race is done in Eden Park...no wonder I hear that is a hilly race). Going up was challenging, but also fun. At the top, we stopped at a bench and just looked out over the city for a few minutes. Then we headed back down to our car and took a few pictures before leaving.

We climbed up a small rock wall.
Sweaty and gross, but still in love!

*Our garage is now in full working order. Dan had purposefully rigged it not to work so that I could see the note on the front door. (And Jill, it's very clean).

10 Weeks And Counting (imagine drumroll)...

UNTIL THESE TWO REALLY COOL, REALLY FUN, REALLY, TOTALLY FOR-EACH-OTHER LOVEBIRDS WED!!!AND THIS IS HOW MATT FEELS ABOUT IT*

*(this is the standard pose for Sarah Beth's soon to be husband)

*(if you don't believe me, here he was a few months ago)*(and yet again, on Memorial Day)
I remember on this night, we all were sitting around in the living room and talking. Talk of marriage and a future together was more than hinted at that night. And now, here we are with 10 weeks to go!!!

Sarah Beth, I am so happy for you. You have a continual glow on your face. And Matt, thank you for treating my sister like the true gem that she is. I know I don't have to tell you this, but you are one blessed man. Welcome to the family!!!

Table For Two

My parents celebrated 36 years of marriage a couple of weeks ago (August 18th). THIRTY-SIX!!! In this day and age, that truly is a celebration of their commitment and love to each other. I am so grateful for the model they were to me as a young child and the model they continue to be to me now. I wanted to do something special for them. I had an idea but it involved a little sneakiness. The only thing I told my dad was to tell mom that he was taking her somewhere as a surprise. He was to bring her to our house for the first stop. Only he didn't know it was the first and only stop. I hope we made their anniversary celebration a memorable one. The pictures below will tell the story....

Jake and Lydia asked to make signs to post outside to show them which way to go (we wanted them to go around to the backyard and come into the house through the back door to avoid the messy kitchen). I said that would be nice...what I did not know was that they insisted on making Grandma and Grandpa close their eyes as they were being led down the stairs from the backyard. Then J & L announced they could open their eyes and here were their reactions.
This picture doesn't show it very well and I forgot to get a picture of the ambiance beforehand. We had the table set for two, candles, white lights, pictures of them on their wedding day, and music playing softly in the background. We also had a makeshift dance floor (4 pieces of leftover Wayne's coating taped together). I could not find our duct tape, so I gave Uncle Matt heavy book tape and he rigged it the night before. It in itself was a memory, as it creaked when you stepped on it, especially near the "seams." The menu is hard to see here. I printed off 3 menus. Two for them at their seats, and one that had picture illustrations of the food, created by my sweet Lid, that was taped to the wall. Under each title of food was the description of that food. We served Festival Salad (came with pear, cranberries, Feta cheese...it was supposed to also have caramelized pecans on top, but I forgot to add them last minute, so we ate them plain later), Artisan Garlic Bread (again was supposed to come with dipping oil, but I forgot that as well), Four Cheese Stuffed Shells (Rachel Ray recipe), and the desserts were a choice of a Strawberry Shortcake Parfait or an Oreo Chocolate Delight Parfait. Our guests ended up getting one of each and sharing them. Beverages offered: Water, Iced Tea, and Coffee...Beverages actually available: Water and Coffee (the third thing thing I forgot). I had also had Jake shave some Hershey's chocolate bar for a pretty effect on the Oreo dessert, but did I remember?...no. Still, despite my memory loss on some things (I'll blame it on only being back on my medicine for a little over a week), we got compliments!
Here was our hired help for the night! Actually, this was a gift on their part as well, but they had a blast participating so they didn't mind. Some funny moments from our waiter/waitress: *Jake had tennis shoes on with his polo and khakis. I thought it was so sweet when I discovered he had changed into his black dress shoes (which he despises). He wanted to go the extra mile for his Grandma and Grandpa's special evening. *We tried to hush the kids from talking too loudly, but I'm sure our guests heard some funny things. We also had to discourage our help from being overly helpful. They wanted to keep going downstairs. And even though the menu was already decided, Lydia went down, unbeknownst to me, with pad and pencil to take orders. They also couldn't help but peek during the couple's dance time. *And our kindly guests even tipped J & L, for which they were very happy about. Lydia even gave change back from her tip...bet that's a first!
Special thanks to Sarah Beth and Matt for helping, too! Dan was out of town during this time and there is no way I would have been able to pull it off by myself. They are in the midst of planning their wedding, so I know time is precious. But them being there made the night even more special.

On the dance floor!

Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad! We love you both very much!
